Golf at the castle

Winge Golf and Country Club

On one of the large estates in Flanders (Belgium), just east of the city of Leuven, lies a true parkland course. This is a course that you will remember for a lot of reasons; the start and finish at the 17th century castle is definitely impressive, as are almost all holes of this course that has the reputation of being rather difficult and long, with plenty of stiff walks between holes. So if you up to the challenge, do not hesitate. Head for Winge Golf and Country Club – proud member of Flying Blue Club Golf – next weekend!

Winge Golf & Country Club is definitely one of the most beautiful courses in The Low Countries, offering a wooded landscape with hills, wide valleys and plains. The length of the 18 holes, par 72 course – designed by Peter Townsend – may be an issue for some, but that is what golf carts are for. Most courses need around 30 to 40 hectares to have a sufficiently attractive lay-out, Winge uses around 60 hectares.

Family estate

“This area was all part of the former family estate”, Philippe Roberti de Winghe explains, the president of the club. His family has lived on the estate since 1658. The name of the family, of the estate and of the golf course comes from the small brook, named the Winghe, which flows through this magnificent part of Flanders, near the small town of Sint-Joris-Winge.

The course – established in 1988 – is a great test for all levels of golfers and offers excellent greens. The fairways are sometimes narrow and at times even sloped to either side. As a result, less-than-accurate drives are punished immediately in this naturally undulated landscape. The trip from hole 1 to 18 will take you past plenty of hazards, unexpected plunges towards greens, bunkers and lakes. A comment in the guest book from a player who experienced Winge says it all: “What a beautiful, well-maintained course. Great and incredibly fast greens, ‘blind’ holes, dog legs and elevations. Lovely!”

Room for adventurers

Most of the 700 local members of Winge play at the weekends and on the mornings of week days (course is closed on Mondays). There is plenty of room for adventurers who – with a timely reservation – are welcome to enjoy dinner at the ground floor of the castle, where the clubhouse, the bar and the restaurant are located. The course has a 3 hole, par 10 practice course, plus an unusual bonus: a driving range at the edge of a lake, overlooking the castle.

According to Mr. Roberti, many guests enjoy the combination of playing golf at Winge with a few nights’ stay at the Kloosterhotel in the nearby medieval university city of Leuven. “That way you get the best of both: great golf in the beautiful nature of Winge and the pleasures of staying in a historic town that has more bars and restaurants per inhabitant than any other city in this part of the world.”
