Flying Blue Golf Partner: Golf del Sur, Tenerife
Golf on the Island of Eternal Spring
Where in Europe can you play golf in mid winter at temperatures of around 23 degrees, with a nice balmy wind and with views of a snow-capped peak? Must be Tenerife! In the southeast of the island, the Golf del Sur offers three lovely courses that appeal to both beginners (hcp max 28) and seasoned golfers. It is the first venue in the Canary Islands to offer three competition courses, including lots of challenging and interesting features, like the bunkers with volcanic black sand.
Golf del Sur is a green oasis on the southeast coast of Tenerife, with plenty of palm trees and giant cactuses on the course. The club also has three excellent golf courses that offer a great refuge for golfers in mid winter, even for pro golfers. The club has been the stage for many competitions at the highest international level, like the Tenerife Open (at that time part of the PGA European Volvo Tour) in 1989, 1992, 1993 and 1994.
Excitement for all
After a redesign in 2005, the three courses (Golf del Sur, Links and North Course) offer plenty of excitement for golfers of all levels. The courses have huge greens and wide fairways and a number of carefully designed difficulties created by the two water hazards. The signature hole of the North course is without doubt the par 5 hole 3 of 480 metres long, bordered on its right by an impressive canyon of ochre rock and on the left by wide sand roughs. The green of this spectacular third hole is surrounded by a huge bunker of black sand. A very tough hole.
The Golf del Sur complex offers all facilities one should expect from a club of this level, with a Golf Academy, driving range, a putting and chipping green, a pro shop and changing rooms, a restaurant and a bar.
Mild and smooth weather
One of the best things about this part of Tenerife is the mild and very smooth weather at any time of the year. Tenerife is ‘The island of Eternal Spring’, as there is no cold or hot weather season and very little rainfall. The website of Golf del Sur mentions a long list of flora and fauna that is common here, including the local black lizard (Gallota Galloti) that you will come across frequently on the courses.
Many golfers that visit the southeast of Tenerife for golf in winter bring their families with them. The pleasant coastal town of Golf del Sur offers many different types of accommodation and facilities like restaurants and bars, without being as crowded as the well-known tourists cities of The Canaries.
That makes this area a wonderful destination for a golf and holiday trip. Where in Europe can you spend sunny days at the golf course or at the beach in mid winter, while enjoying the view of the white profile of the Teide Peak? Only in Golf del Sur, Tenerife.
