Golfing along the Costa de Lisboa

The Golfe do Bom Sucesso golf course is one of the places along the Costa de Lisboa/Silver Coast that makes a strong point: golf in this region can be equally exciting and challenging as in the Algarve. Golfe do Bom Sucesso is located in Óbidos, about 67 kilometres from Lisbon airport. This is a relatively new 18-hole Championship Golf course, designed by the world-renowned architect Donald Steel and opened in 2008. Four years later, the course finally has lost its brand new look and all flora that was put in, has matured somewhat; the 1,000 new olive trees that were planted in 2009 are doing well and by the looks of it, this course could have been in this place for ages.

Perfect golfing day

The course stretches along the length of a holiday resort with the same name. At first it may seem that this course is built exclusively for the length-challenged player, as well as the low handicapper. From the White Tees, Bom Sucesso is a golf course difficult enough to test the pros. From the forward tees however, all can enjoy the experience of avoiding the variety of bunkers and other hazards on this course. In fact, any amateur is guaranteed to enjoy a perfect golfing day, as each hole allows enough space to play avoiding the hazards and it’s easy to find your ball anywhere.
The first 9 holes are played on a level part of the large terrain, but the back 9 are completely different. The very uneven terrain makes many holes quite spectacular, with a series of spectacular views. Some call the final three holes of this course the most exciting in Portugal. The 17th in particular is truly great. This par 5 is located at the highest elevation of the site, swinging downhill and right to left over some superb ridges to a green which has the lagoon of Obidos as its backdrop. The views from the green on the Par 5 Hole 17 are magnificent. Holing out with the lovely Obidos lagoon in the background is not surprisingly the most popular snapshot theme at this course.
