A green oasis in Andalucia’s arid farmlands

La Estancia Golf Club, Chiclana, Costa de la Luz (Spain)

La Estancia Golf ClubSet in the middle of the Andalusian farmlands, it is a no frills golf course that is nevertheless quite challenging. It is the way the Dutch architect Alan Rijks planned it to be: fitting in the rather arid Chicklana landscape, but with all the complications the make a course fun to play!

La Estancia Golf Club, in Southern Spain’s Cadiz region, is one of the partners of the Flying Blue Golf program. It is located at the coast of Chiclana on the Costa de la Luz in Southern Spain, just 2.7 kilometers from the beach at La Barrosa.

This golf course is actually in its second life. After the old Meliá Golf course was sold to new owners, it was renovated and changed to fit the needs of local and international golfers in the competitive Cadiz environment. The Golf Club La Estancia, as it is now called, was inaugurated on July 8, 2009.

Green oasis in farmland

The par 72 Estancia course is a parkland course, located in the countryside. The 5,935 meters long course (from the yellow tees) was meant to look as natural as possible, a green oasis in the farmland of Chiclana. Although the course is rather flat overall, it has enough complicating factors to even keep low handicappers busy. The greens at La Estancia are quite large with lots of delicate slopes; the size of most elevated greens allows for many different flag positions and gives the sensation of playing a different course on each occasion. “To play your handicap at La Estancia, you should be a good putter and definitely avoid the rough!” an experienced player recently wrote in his review of the Estancia course.

Various obstacles

Situated in an area of 82 hectares, the course is beautifully integrated into the typical Andalusian environment. The course includes various obstacles, three lakes, two streams, hills, bunkers and rough. The course offers several protected areas, highlighting the beauty of the region. The protected areas were cleverly fitted in the overall design, to encourage players to use different strategies for each hole. The dominant East and West winds come into play at several holes, adding to the overall attraction and difficulty of the course. The architect included several lakes and streams in his design, forming the natural habitat for the more than 25 species of birds that accompany the player during their round at La Estancia.

Lovely patio and spectacular terrace

La Estancia Golf is very suitable for players who prefer to walk their round, but the club also has sufficient buggies available. The club offers a pro golfshop, a driving range, a chipping & putting area and a golf academy where you can book lessons. The Clubhouse, inspired by traditional Andalucian architecture, has modern changing room facilities, a lovely interior patio, bar, lounges, a restaurant and a spectacular terrace overlooking the course.
