A green oasis in Andalucia’s arid farmlands

La Estancia Golf Club, Chiclana, Costa de la Luz (Spain)

La Estancia Golf Club La Estancia Golf Club in Chiclana on the Costa de la Luz, just 2.7 kilometers from the beach at La Barrosa near Cadiz, is one of the partners of the Flying Blue Golf programSet in the middle of the Andalusian farmlands, this is a no frills golf course that is nevertheless quite challenging. This is the way the Dutch architect Alan Rijks planned it: fitting into the rather arid Chiclana landscape, but with all the complications that make a course fun to play!

This golf course is actually in its second life. After the old Meliá Golf course was sold to new owners, it was renovated and adapted to fit the needs of local and international golfers in the competitive Cadiz environment. The Golf Club La Estancia, as it is now called, was inaugurated on July 8, 2009.

Green oasis in farmland

The par 72 Estancia course is a parkland course, set in the countryside. The 5,935 meters long course (from the yellow tees) was designed to look as natural as possible, a green oasis in the farmland of Chiclana. Although the course is rather flat overall, it has enough complicating factors to keep even low handicappers busy. The greens at La Estancia are quite large with lots of delicate slopes; the size of most elevated greens allows for many different flag positions and gives the sensation of playing a different course on each occasion. “To play your handicap at La Estancia, you should be a good putter and definitely avoid the rough!” an experienced player wrote in his review of the Estancia course.

Various obstacles

Situated in an area of 82 hectares, the course is beautifully integrated into the typical Andalusian landscape. The course includes various obstacles, three lakes, two streams, hills, bunkers and rough. It features several protected areas, highlighting the beauty of the region. The protected areas were cleverly fitted into the overall design, to encourage players to use different strategies for each hole. The dominant East and West winds come into play at several holes, adding to the overall attraction and difficulty. The architect included several lakes and streams in the design, these form the natural habitat for more than 25 species of birds, that accompany the player during his round.

Lovely patio and spectacular terrace

La Estancia Golf is very suitable for players who prefer to walk their round, but the club also has carts available. There is also a pro golfshop, a driving range, a chipping & putting area and a golf academy where you can book lessons. The Clubhouse, inspired by traditional Andalucian architecture, has modern changing room facilities, a lovely interior patio, bar, lounges, a restaurant and a spectacular terrace overlooking the course.
